S4CE investigated how subsurface geo-energy technologies could contribute to the energy transition while improving understanding and mitigation of associated environmental risks.

The project combined fundamental science, field research, monitoring and technology development across sites associated with geothermal energy, carbon storage and other subsurface energy applications.

Its work addressed:

Induced Seismicity

Fugitive Emissions

Groundwater Contamination

Fluid Migration

Well Integrity

Subsurface Monitoring

Life Cycle Assessment

Multi-Risk Assessment

S4CE also emphasised transparent communication with stakeholders and the relevance of scientific evidence for policy and decision-making.
